Powerful and lightweight solution: technotrans presents a weight-optimised battery cooling system for railway vehicles

  • New zeta.rail 50 battery cooling system for railway vehicles as a weight-optimised alternative to canned motor pumps
  • Reduced environmental impact thanks to a refrigerant with a low GWP or propane
  • Versatile use in battery-powered railway applications

Lightweight and compact with identical power: With a new pump type for the zeta.rail battery cooling system series, technotrans presents a fit-for-the-future innovation in the field of weight- and space-saving solutions for railway applications. The weight of the pump with its entirely new design is only one third of that of standard canned motor pumps. The new technology is now available as part of the new energy efficient zeta.rail 50 battery cooling system that technotrans will showcase for the first time at the trade fair. In addition, technotrans will present a completely redundant, customised battery cooling system for use in regional trains.

"Our new pump, which we will present at the InnoTrans 2022 trade fair, is a true innovation in the field of railway battery cooling systems. Our customers can now benefit from this weight- and space-optimised system," says Bastian Thiel,Business Development Manager E-Mobility at technotrans. In addition, the technology provider will also focus on its unique solution competence: "Battery- and hydrogen-powered railway vehicles are an important high-growth market for technotrans which enables us to showcase our long-standing experience and extensive expertise – ranging from the relevant standards and approval procedures up to customised solutions for very specific requirements," stresses Thiel.

Lightweight, compact and powerful: improvement of the entire system thanks to the new pump

The new pump for battery cooling systems made by technotrans has the same technical characteristics as standard canned motor pumps that are normally used for railway applications thanks to their operational reliability and low maintenance requirements. However, the new pump weighs only a third and is much more compact. "The 66% weight reduction and the small footprint of the new pump offer our customers new opportunities when it comes to battery-powered mobility solutions," says Bastian Thiel.

The innovative component is available for all technotrans series products as well as for customised systems. At the trade fair, visitors can get an impression of the new pump in a zeta.rail 50 battery cooling system which is available as a 2.5 kW to 6 kW series system. The energy-efficient system already uses a refrigerant with a low GWP (global warming potential). In addition, technotrans now also offers propane as a natural refrigerant and sustainable alternative. All interested trade fair visitors can obtain more information about this refrigerant at the trade fair stand.

High level of operational reliability and energy efficiency for regional trains

Once again, technotrans provides proof of its expertise in the field of customised high-end solutions with a bespoke battery cooling system that has been developed specifically for use in German regional trains. The system with a cooling capacity of 8 kW is particularly energy-efficient thanks to active and passive cooling circuits. The energy-saving passive cooling circuit uses the outdoor air for cooling whenever the ambient temperature permits this. The entirely redundant design with two refrigeration circuits ensures a high level of operational reliability. "Our cooling systems are a core component of the powertrain and are, therefore, essential for the operation of the entire vehicle. This is why the operational reliability is so important," explains Thiel. "Our customised solutions allow us to show what is possible in this area from a technical point of view."

You can find technotrans at the InnoTrans trade fair in Berlin on 20-23 September at stand 310 in hall 14.1.
