Formnext 2021: technotrans presents compact and energy efficient cooling systems for additive manufacturing applications

Efficient solutions for consistent, high-performance production processes: At the Formnext, the world's leading trade fair for additive manufacturing, technotrans SE will present its extremely precise, customisable cooling systems. Thanks to their compact design, low energy consumption and high temperature stability, the units are optimally suitable for use in demanding processes, e.g. for the production ofcomponents for the aircraft, automotive and medical sectors. At its trade fair stand, the specialist for thermal management solutions will present its efficient "ECOtec.chiller pure 15" and the particularly compact plug-in cooling unit of the "piko" series in the 19" format.

"Additive manufacturing is an innovative production method that creates a whole new dynamic and opens up a greater design freedom during the product development process," says Ingo Gdanitz, Business Development Manager at technotrans. "Our cooling technology plays an important role in this context. With our solutions, we support consistent, high-performance production processes and also enable a very high level of efficiency which is good for the environment." technotrans realises this by using intelligent components and refrigerants with a low global warming potential (GWP), among other things. The cooling solutions, which are characterised by a small footprint, ensure reproducible processes and are available with a cooling capacity between 0.3 kW and 30 kW. "These characteristics and features are of crucial importance in additive manufacturing," explains Gdanitz.

At its stand at the Formnext trade fair, technotrans will present the pure.line series of the new ECOtec.chiller – an entirely modular and thus customisable unit for energy-efficient and reliable cooling. The pure.line series is the cost-optimised, compact variant of the chiller with the pure 15 model being the option with the highest level of compactness. Thanks to the outstanding reliability, consistent cooling can be ensured even for time-consuming additive manufacturing tasks. As these processes usually rely on a smaller cooling output, the pure.line series offers a cooling capacity between 1.5 kW and 30 kW. "Despite the small footprint, this is remarkable performance compared to the competition," says Gdanitz.

Fully integrated cooling solutions for selective laser melting applications
In addition to the ECOtec.chiller, technotrans will also present a 19" plug-in cooling unit of the piko series. Due to its compact form factor, it can be easily integrated in a superordinate system close to the laser source. The solution offers a high temperature stability of up to +/- 0.1 K, a service-friendly design with maintenance from the front and a cooling capacity of up to 3 kW. Due to its special characteristics, the technotrans system is perfectly suitable for selective laser melting applications in which the laser source and optics units must be cooled with the utmost precision and reliability. These applications include the melting of plastic or metal powder for the production of a wide range of components for the aircraft, automotive and medical sectors.

"Additive manufacturing is becoming increasingly mainstream – not only for industrial applications. As a result, the requirements that need to be fulfilled by the cooling systems also increase," explains Gdanitz. 3D printing systems, for example, have been increasingly transformed from pure prototyping systems to systems for the production of small series during the last few years. The higher output levels resulting from this evolution also require higher levels of performance and availability in terms of the heat removal, and the technotrans solutions, which comply with the latest ecodesign directives and regulations on fluorinated greenhouse gases, fulfil these requirements.
